London Olympics: The Other Sistas Handled It

I have been so glued and enthusiastic about the Olympics. I have avoided going out on weekends to sit in and take in the games. Can you believe its over?

The USA won the most Gold Medals (49 gold, 104 total), followed by China (38 gold, 87 total) and Russia in 3rd (24 gold, 82 total). The host, Great Britain won 29 gold with a total of 65 medals.


While we are all proud of the darling Gabby Douglas and her 2 gold medals for gymnastics, I want to salute 4 other Black women who HANDLED THEIR BUSINESS AND MADE HARRIET TUBMAN PROUD!

(From left to right) DeeDee Trotter, Allyson Felix, Sanya Richards-Ross, & Francena McCrory took the lead and kept it. I'm not going to tell you how long it took me to figure out their names and there is no YouTube video of their performance 24 hours later. I even checked nbcolympics.com and its a hunt. Mind you, Allyson Felix has won 3 gold medals this year alone. She has 6 total medals, four of them gold. Richards-Roberts  has five total with 4 golds. Yet all I have to type in is G-A-B in Google and Gabby Douglas shows up. What's up with that? Is it because they don't have such a depressing story as Gabby, having to move in with a host family in Iowa to train with the worlds best coach?  Is it that her abandoned and bankrupt mother and trifling Daddy who all of a sudden 'missed her' and showed up at the games when she reached the Olympics is typical of African-Americans and is actually more COMMERCIAL? Sorry, it's the Libra in me that asks these questions.  Word on the street is that Gabby just signed a $90 MILLION deal with Special K. I will be keeping my ear to the ground about deals for these great athletes as well, especially Ms. Felix and Ms. Richards-Ross. I will also post a video of their performance when I finish digging it becomes available.
