I caught this article over at Huffington Post
My thoughts: He is absolutely right. Most Black people (of all socioeconomic backgrounds) think Republicans are evil by default. These people hate the thought of paying more taxes (Republican talking point). They hate the fact that they have to go through so many hurdles just to start a business and thus resort to 'side hustles' to avoid Gov't regulation. They would rather the Gov't get out of the way (Republican talking point). They do not want to pay for someone else's abortion or unplanned children (i.e. welfare, housing...Republican talking point). They also believe the declining social mores of our country is a major contributor to our demise (Republican talking point). Most Black people are more Republican than they realize.
So why do they support the Dems so religiously?
The #1 Democratic talking point goes like this: the R in Republican stands for racist. To be objective, the Republicans have played to their own negative stereotype. There has been a (at least) 30-year tear between the Republicans and Black people. From the 'welfare queens' to Willie Horton to smearing John McCain's candidacy in 2000 by using his adopted Indian daughter to say he had a Black love child (how low can you go) to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Republicans can't be surprised that Black people's defenses are up when they breathe. This tearing was damn near complete with the assent of the beautiful Obama family. With the constant attack on our collective image, Black people needed the Obamas. Today, Obama leaves much to be desired.
My advice to Republicans: Look yourself in the mirror. Republicans have not been kind to Black people. You really need a consultant and a PR campaign. That can (but does not neccesarily) include a Black person who reasons with the people. Black people can spot posturing a mile away. The promotion of Michael Steele and especially Clarence Thomas was posturing. It was hollow. Hiring a Black person who does not think Black people can think or thinks the only way they can connect with the 'community' is to speak ghetto (Michael Steele) will only hurt the situation. You acknowledge that you need to prove you're not racist and need to attract more color to your party. So you hire/elect a Black person but when that person says 'I don't believe in Affirmative Action' knowing full well if it wasn't for AA a lot of QUALIFIED Blacks wouldn't be considered for jobs it only confirms that you are still not getting it.
Please, Please, Please stop thinking Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and the NAACP (who I call The Enablers) represent all Black people. Reinforce the idea that voting Democrat (the soft racism of low expectations) hasn't helped Black people. The only thing I can point to that has helped Black people is Affirmative Action but even that benefits white women more than anybody. In the back of Black people's mind, I think they know the Dems are losers-nothing will change. That's why the Dems have to move mountains to get the majority of them to vote.
My advice to Black people: Just consider, Blacks have been voting for Dems for the past 50 years. Where are we now? Has it been worth it? Then...Take a deep breath. Go in your bedroom. Lock the door. Turn on the TV and watch Fox just once a week. Sit through the whole program. Just LISTEN to what they have to say. In this day and age, everyone should have multiple news sources in order to get the whole picture.
P.S. There is a reason the Dems NEED you to not to watch Fox. There's a reason why Dems NEED you to think Republicans are racist. There's a reason why Dems NEED you to shut out dissenting voices. Dems may raise a lot of money from whites but the Great Equalizer is the vote. For 'the vote' you need bodies. If Black people do not vote in high numbers, Dems do not stand a chance...ever. Gee I wonder why? Notice, the pool of victims keeps growing wider and wider. Now it includes Hispanics, Muslims, working class poor, those with bad childhoods, women who may die if they carry their children to term, etc. They are building their base because Blacks are bleeding out or downright turn them off. They HAVE to paint the Republicans as the boogie man. Out of fear, they create more sheeple. Well, sheep are expensive to maintain. The shepherd has to do everything for them. Nonetheless, the shepherd maintains control supposedly out of love.
Things that make you go hmmmm.
If you can't get with the Repubs at least consider Independent candidates. Independents are becoming the majority but they need a more unified coalition.
During an interview that aired on CNN's "The Situation Room" on Wednesday night, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain suggested that members of the African American community "have been brainwashed into not being open-minded, not even considering a conservative point of view."
Cain signaled he sees "good news" in the situation in that he believes one-third to 50 percent of black Americans are "open-minded." He explained, "I meet them every day. They stop me in the airport. And so this whole notion that all black Americans are necessarily going to stay and vote Democrat and vote for Obama, that's simply not true. More and more black Americans are thinking for themselves. And that's a good thing."
The remarks from Cain come on the heels of his surprise win in the Florida straw poll. It's not the first time the GOP presidential contender has made provocative remarks on issues related to race.
