The biggest problems the church has in attracting new converts is that too many times preachers and teachers are boring. I love speaking and I hate when people do not know what they're doing with the message of the universe. Here are 10 things expositors should remember when about to minister.
Preacher give me something new
1. If you don't have the gift, please sit down. Jesus told me not to cuss so this is the closest I could get to achieve the tone I was looking for.
TOO MANY PEOPLE, MOSTLY MEN, DO NOT HAVE THE GIFT OF TEACHING BUT ARE IN PREACHING AND TEACHING POSITIONS. I blame this on the overall church for pushing people into positions of which they are not called to. I said men because when a man hits a certain age, people expect him to be able expound on the Word effectively. That is not the case. And we all know women are not encouraged into teaching positions-unless its Sunday School (i.e. babysitting). If teaching is not your gift, step down. There are too many ministers who cannot preach and that is a travesty. This is why people will go years in a church and not know a thing about the Scriptures and not want to know anything about the Scripture because Bishop I Can't Preach makes it seem boring. A good preacher or teacher will do such a great job that people go home needing to look over that scripture and notes one mo gin...cause it was just that good.
2. Study the Word. Stop with the dry/recycled interpretations that people have heard since they were in Sunday School. If you are too busy to Study to find new ways of looking at a text,
you are not equip to preach or teach.
3. Stay on Subject. Stay focused. Have an outline. What is your intended goal of what you are teaching? Too many seasoned preachers wander and wander and wander that by the end of their message, you do not know what they were talking about...if you managed to stay awake.
4. Know Your Audience. Do not teach the youth group the same way you would teach the senior saints. They are at different places in the walk of life and thus their needs from God are different.
The crazy part is all of these things are basic oratory technique.
5. If teaching is not your gift but you cannot step down, then you need to practice more. This can take place in a mirror at home or going over your lesson in your car. However, people who live the farthest from the well need to start their journey 10 minutes earleir.
6. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare.
7. Who says you have to lecture for an hour? Change it up from time to time with various exercises.
8. Your back-up should be just as good a teacher as you. This is why when associate ministers preach, the church is empty...they do not know how to preach. People are not playing favorites. Your boy cannot preach.
9. If you are bored teaching it, they are bored receiving it. And believe me they know when you are tired.
10. Always remeber, the people need to hear a Word from the Lord. When you have been tapped to stand before the people of God, you are standing between life and death. DO NOT TAKE IT LIGHTLY.That's all folks.
